At Dora Kennedy French Immersion, Principal James Spence leads with purpose, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child. A third-generation educator with 22 years in education, Mr. Spence has served as Principal of our school for the past 5 years
For Mr. Spence, education is more than a profession—it’s a legacy. His leadership is shaped by a lifelong commitment to student growth, teacher support, and community service. Known for being approachable, visible, and deeply invested in building relationships, he works tirelessly to ensure both students and teachers have what they need to succeed.
Beyond the school walls, Mr. Spence is dedicated to mentoring and uplifting young people. He is the founder of Men About Progress Youth Male Mentoring Organization, which supports young men in becoming confident, capable, and community-minded leaders. His service extends beyond education—Mr. Spence is a Veteran of the United States Armed Forces and an active member of several distinguished organizations, including Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the American Legion, and The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Virginia, Free and Accepted Masonic Order.
Family is at the heart of Mr. Spence’s life. Married for 26 years to his wife, Aleemah, he is the proud father of James III (23), Asada (18), and Asha (8). Together, they lead a household rooted in faith, love, and service to others.
When asked what inspires him most as a leader, Mr. Spence shares:
“Every student has a unique journey, and every teacher has the power to guide that journey. My role is to ensure our school is a place where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to reach their highest potential.”
Under his leadership, Dora Kennedy French Immersion continues to grow as a community where every voice matters and every learner is allowed to thrive.
