Purpose

The purpose of the Seal of Biliteracy is to: 

  • Recognize the value of language learning in public schools.

  • Encourage students to attain high levels of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English.

  • Affirm heritage languages.

  • Provide employers with a way to identify individuals with language and biliteracy skills.

  • Prepare students with the critical skills needed to succeed in a global society.

  • Strengthen intercultural communication, affirm the value of diversity, and honor the multiple cultures and languages within our communities.

What do students receive when they earn the Seal of Biliteracy in Maryland? 

Students who meet the eligibility criteria for the Seal of Biliteracy are formally recognized as Seal of Biliteracy Candidates on their high school transcripts. In addition to this academic distinction, recipients are awarded a medal and an official certificate from the World Languages Department, acknowledging their achievement in biliteracy and their commitment to global competency.
