The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy is an award presented by participating public school systems to recognize students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages other than English.
Originally launched in California in 2011, the Seal of Biliteracy is now offered in all 50 states and Washington, DC. Maryland officially adopted the program in 2016, when the Seal of Biliteracy Bill was signed into law. Prince George’s County was one of the first counties in Maryland to award this honor to eligible students.
During SY 2024-2025, Prince George’s County Public Schools and the World Languages Office honored 473 students with this prestigious recognition celebrating biliteracy in English and the following languages: Spanish, French, ASL, Mandarin, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, and Pashto.
