Important Transportation Update: Vacant Bus Routes

Vacant Bus Route List

Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) Transportation continues to face a nationwide challenge—a shortage of school bus drivers. As we begin the new school year, some routes remain vacant because we do not yet have a permanent driver assigned.

What this means for you:

  • Routes identified as vacant may experience delays until a permanent driver is assigned.
  • To ensure students are transported, these routes will be temporarily combined with other runs. This may cause buses to arrive later than scheduled.

How you will be notified:

  • Families will continue to receive delay messages during the first week of school if your child’s bus is combined with another route.
  • You may use the StopFinder app to track your bus; however, please note that information may not always be fully accurate during this adjustment period.
  • You may also call our Transportation Communications Hotline at 301-952-6570 for the most up-to-date information about your bus.

What we are doing about it:

  • Our transportation team is actively working to reassign existing staff to cover vacant routes while permanent drivers are hired.
  • We continue to partner with our Human Resources team to recruit and hire new bus drivers and attendants.
  • During the first weeks of school, routes may be combined or adjusted once ridership numbers stabilize.

How you can help:

  • Make sure you have your ParentVUE account set up so we can send you notifications through our communication systems.
  • Download the StopFinder app if you have not already, and also our new parent app, Chipmunk, to stay connected.
  • Visit our Back-to-School Resources page for instructions and additional information.
  • If you or someone you know is seeking employment, PGCPS has immediate opportunities available in our Transportation Department for full-time, part-time, and substitute positions. Please visit our [PGCPS Careers Page] for more information.

We understand the impact that delays can have on families, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to stabilize routes as quickly as possible. Our commitment remains to provide safe, reliable, and timely transportation for all students.
