Safety and Security Enhancements

Security Enhancement Devices

Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for every student, staff member, and visitor. As part of our continued efforts to strengthen school security, the district has introduced Security Enhancement Devices at all high schools, including Non-traditional North, South, and Middle School Programs, and at select Middle Schools and Academies.

These Security Enhancement Devices provide an added layer of protection by identifying items that could pose a threat before they enter the building. Units will be located at main entrances and may be used during athletic events, performances, and other large gatherings determined by the Office of Safety and Security Services.

The Security Enhancement Devices were selected because it is fast, effective, and less disruptive than traditional metal detectors, helping PGCPS balance safety with the smooth flow of daily school operations. Learn more about the system and view PGCPS school building entry protocols below.

Safety and Security Enhancements Q & A

Why is PGCPS conducting daily weapons detection screening at our schools?

Screenings are a proactive step to help keep dangerous items out of schools and ensure a safe environment for teaching and learning.

Who will conduct the screenings?

Screenings will be managed by trained school-based staff, including security personnel, principals, assistant principals, and other designated support staff.

Who will be screened?

All students, visitors, and volunteers entering the building.

What if a student has health concerns that prevent them from walking through the security enhancement devices?

The school administration, in coordination with the Office of Safety and Security Services, will arrange alternative accommodations.

What does the screening process look like?

  1. Individuals walk through the Security Enhancement Devices one at a time.
  2. Items that may cause false alarms- such as binders, laptops, umbrellas, or tablets- may be handed to staff and returned after screening.
  3. If the Security Enhancement Devices signals an alert, the person will move to a secondary screening area for a quick check.

Will wand-style detectors be used?

Yes. Hand-held devices may be used if secondary screening is necessary.

Will backpacks, purses, or bags be searched?

Yes, if the Security Enhancement Devices indicates a potential threat or if reasonable suspicion exists.

Does PGCPS have the right to search a student or their belongings?

Yes. Consistent with Administrative Procedure 2804.1 - Safety and Security Enhancement, Board Policy 2804 - Search and Seizure, and the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, searches may be conducted to protect the safety of the school community.

What happens if a student refuses to be screened?

School administration will address any student who refuses to be screened in accordance with Administrative Procedure 2804.1. Any visitors or others refusing to be screened or to cooperate with school officials during the screening process will be denied entry to school property.

Will screenings cause delays getting to class?

The Security Enhancement Devices are designed for high output and should not cause significant delays. Any delays or adjustments that need to be made after the rollout will be addressed by school staff.

Do the scanners use facial recognition or record personal data?

No. The Security Enhancement Devices do not capture or store personal identifying information.

Will screenings also be required during after-school activities and public events?

Yes. The Security Enhancement Devices will be used at athletic competitions, graduations, and other school-hosted events to ensure a safe environment for participants and guests.
