School Resource Officers (SROs) are uniformed members of the Prince George's County Police Department or Municipal Police Departments (Greenbelt Police Department, Hyattsville City Police Department, and Bowie Police Department) who serve in schools throughout Prince George's County. Their primary role is to help maintain a safe school environment while building trust and positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
SROs work in close partnership with members of PGCPS's Office of Safety and Security Services (School Security) and school administrators to support safe and respectful learning environments. In addition to responding to incidents when needed, SROs also participate in emergency drills and contribute to proactive safety planning across the district. Through this collaboration, SROs help create a school culture where students feel secure, supported, and respected.
In addition to their safety role, SROs engage with students through mentorship, community events, and classroom presentations on topics such as law enforcement, safety awareness, and conflict resolution. Their presence is intended to promote safety, not discipline, and they are trained to support the unique needs of school communities.
SROs are committed to being approachable mentors, role models, and partners in creating a secure and respectful learning atmosphere.
